Much of my inspiration is taken from woodworkers of the \u201cmid century modern\u201d period, such as George Nakashima and Sam Maloof.\u00a0 I use natural oils and varnishes as finishes, and do not stain my work so the natural character of the wood is preserved.<\/p>\n

I have taken courses in furniture design and construction held by local artisans and continue to look for new ways to bring out the beauty in the woods I love to utilize.<\/p>\n

Little did I realize that in retirement I would return to my childhood interest of working with wood.\u00a0 We retired to western North Carolina for many reasons.\u00a0 One of those was to have easy access to the many beautiful, local hardwoods found within our mountains.\u00a0 Maple, cherry, oak, ash, hickory and walnut are especially well suited to furniture construction, and have contrast in color and texture when used together.\u00a0 In addition to furniture, I like to use free-form wood and burls to build home and office accessories like lamps, trays and boxes.<\/p>\n

Like so many other woodworkers today, I was introduced to the wood shop in junior high school, back when industrial arts classes were still offered.\u00a0 I now build furniture and accessories in my small shop at my home here in Brevard, NC.<\/p>\n
