Marian Miller<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

My work is inspired by the geography and nature that surrounds us, but it can be challenging to represent a landscape, flower or bird in stained glass.\u00a0 I must draw out a design that considers the way that glass will break when scored with a hand-cutter.\u00a0 Most of my work is done in the traditional \u201ccopper-foil\u201d method perfected by Tiffany, but I often incorporate an element that has been fused in a kiln, manipulated with a torch or overlaid with molten solder detail on copper.\u00a0 Fusing many layers of stained glass in a very hot kiln comprises some of my work.<\/p>\n

Since childhood, I have been fascinated with the beauty of stained glass \u2013 the colors and textures, the natural flaws, and how the light, especially sunlight, changes the glass as it transmits through it.\u00a0 The science that turns sand, minerals and metals into stained glass is magical.<\/p>\n

In 1991, I was fortunate to learn both the art and craft of stained glass design when I studied and apprenticed with a group of artisans in Sarasota, FL.<\/p>\n

A 9th-generation native of the Southern Highland, I was born and reared in Transylvania County, and am a graduate of Appalachian State University.\u00a0 Having lived around the country for 30 years, I moved back home in 2005 and currently reside in Pisgah Forest, where my glass studio is located.<\/p>\n
